As the others have suggested why not post the name here you may find you have some other relatives out there. A lot of men couldn't cope when they came back from the war he may have been fine and just decided he wasn't happy with your Nan for whatever reason. Divorce wasn't too easy back then and you may even find he eventually went of and married someone else, I found a bigamist in my family in this way.
You have a very interesting story to pursue and I wish you all the success.
I think the Croix de guerre may help you find him, he must have done something that made the french want to reward him.

Have you tried getting his service records there may be something of interest in those. I found out my grandad had been married in Burma and no one knew !!

Anyway if you can let us know what the name is because there are people here who would love to help.

genes reuntied pay £5 get 30 credits you can go through certificates there, you only get a week but i traced a friends cousin that way, so long as yu know afew details, then you can trace electorol rolls etc...goosd luck :)

The Croix de guerr is the French medal of Honour, Try to google him some thing might turn up, A search of the Birth Death and Marriage index's would be a start you can view them at www.ancestry.com.

When using google site try news then archive he may just turn up there.

Good luck and good hunting

An other thing you can try is the electoral register.

Go to your local library and see if they are linked up to ancestry.com for free otherwise use theri free trial. inpout his name and year of birth plus country and county of birth - if you know it. Then click on search and follow the links on the left hand side of the page until you click on the death index for the UK and look at the entries to see if one fits. otherwise try thej FreeBMD website.

i didn't find genes reunited helpful I'm afraid, though i would suggest google as someone else has already said.

What was your grand fathers name, if you need help from one of the researchers you would have to give, his name, was he born in Gateshead and if you could give your nan's name we can find out when they married. I think everyone is patiently waiting to start the search for him on your behalf

I back the suggestion of posting the name... justme has a great grasp on UK sources, and OFTEN does lookups.
Just a question.. someone military here in the US will normally have a file in military archives. It seems likely that there is an equivalent in the UK, and with his war service, that may be an option? Might he have had a military based pension?
Best of luck...

Since he was born in 1901, it can be assumed that he has passed away so you could provide additional information to you question that gives his name, someone here might be able to dig something up. You also said he left with your nanna (what is her name). And do you know where he "left from?" That type of information might help one of us find something for you.

Without a name it is going to be impossible for any of us to help you with your quest.
Its Just Me- hit the nail on the head. We are all just itching to try and help.
Put in some additional information, and we can do some look ups for you.
Don't forget too that the war had some dreadful effects on people when they came back to civilian life, and some men had an awful time trying to adjust, don't be too hard on him leaving your Nanna. It could be that his health didn't allow him to stay with her and take on the responsibility of family life again. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome was not identified in those days.

Looking forward to helping.
