If you have his social security number, you can write for a copy of his SS-5. This was his application for his SS number.

Social Security Administration
OEO FOIA Workgroup
300 N. Green Street
P.O. Box 33022
Baltimore, Maryland 21290-3022

They will need his name, social security number, date of birth and date of death.

Currently it costs $27 dollars, but it usually provides parental information. My grandmother's did.

As for birth certificates, there are some out there that are free or available for small fees. You need to contact the state he was born in - try at the county level or at the site below to see where you would need to go to get his birth certificate.

Try the Latter-Day Saints. Say what you will about us, but we are scary good genealogists. My teacher actually used the church (she's not a member of it even) and she discovered some long-lost brothers. So do it. We got the Lord on our side.

If you know the social security number, you can try this site. It is the Social Security Death Index, but chances are that your great-grandfather is no longer living.
