When the word "removed" is used to describe a relationship, it indicates that the two people are from different generations. "Once removed" indicates a difference of one generation, "twice removed" indicates a difference of two generations, and so forth.

For example, the child of your first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. That is, your cousin's child would be "almost" your first cousin, except that he or she is one generation removed from that relationship. Likewise, the grandchild of your first cousin is your first cousin, twice removed (two generations removed from being a first cousin).

something like the number of generations you have to go back in time to find a common ancestor

3rd child born from your parent in relation to you

Its how far from you main blood line that person is. If i have a second cousin twice removed then its my grandmothers sisters granddaughter.

It means they are from different generations. It's kind of hard to explain but, for instance -- first cousins are in the same generation, they share grandparents. Second cousins are in the same generation, they share great-grandparents. However, first cousins once removed do not share this. They are related to each other from different generations. My first cousin is my grandparents' grandchild. But my first cousin once removed is my grandparents great grandchild. This continues through the generations and eventually we all end up being related!

Removed means there is a generation corrisponding to yours on another side of the Family. Your mothers cousen's children would be your 2nd cousins. Thier children would be your 2nd cousin once removed.

This is complicated without the aid of a family tree. It involves uncles, aunties, on all sides. But generally, 3 times removed involves the third generation of a three generation family. So, our grandfathers are siblings, our parents are cousins, we are second cousins, and if you are the grandchild of your granny while I am a grandson of my gramp, and your granny has a brother or sister, with a grandchild of his or her own, then that grandchild is third time removed from me. Get it?

Ray is right, and it only applies to cousins. All of your father's cousins (1st, 2nd, 3rd) are yours too, only once removed. All of your grandmother's are yours too, only twice removed, and so forth.

When your (1st, 2nd, 3rd . . .) cousins have children they will be yours once removed. When you are a geezer like me, and your cousins have GRAND children, they will be yours, twice removed.

6th cousins are children of 5th cousins, and you probably have thousand sof them. 3 times removed means they were 6th cousins of the person's great grandparents or they were great grandchildren of the person's 6th cousin.

it means they've been in prison 3 times
