Position:Home>Genealogy> Ludwig chuddy, poland?

Question:Great information you've added. I was able to find him quickly on Ellis Island...including his father's name (Wojcik) and his hometown (Zygodowice, Austria). You'll note that Galicia was the partition of Poland under the control of Austria-Hungary. So it was correct at the time to refer to the town as being in Austria...but it was also correct to consider it to be Galicia or Poland.

His father is shown on the second page of information about him on the passenger manifest. It shows he was living at 350 Law(e)ndale in Detroit. What's interesting is that on the previous page, it lists his mother, Helena, as his nearest relative back in Poland. So the father came over without the mother or kids. If the kids came over, it was in bits and spurts.

He also wasn't married when he came over. So the next step is to get a copy of their marriage license from the Wayne Co Clerk's office in the Coleman A Young building. That will give you the parents' names for his wife. That should confirm what you have, plus give you her mother's maiden name. Plawecki is SUCH a common name that you'll need more before you can proceed.

Here's a Jozef Chudy who is very possibly related, though not old enough to be Ludwig's father. http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipMa...

Here's the original passenger record for Jakob: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passRe...
What's interesting is that this Jakob lists his father as Adam Chudy from Detroit. Here's a subsequent passenger list from a trip back to Poland.

Your next step should be to write to or visit the National Archives and Records Administration Great Lakes Center at 75th and Pulaski in Chicago. You'll want to request the following documentes on Wiktoria, Ludwig and Joseph:
1. Naturalization Petition
2. Declaration of Intent
3. Petition for Permanent Residency.

All of these will be immensely helpful to you. The other thing to do is to order the parish sacramental register films for the area around Zygadowice. Once you find the family parish, you can usually go back several generations on one film.

I hope this gives you a good place to start. Once you get the next level of documents together, email me and I'll be glad to help you with the next level. Good luck.
