Tennessee comes from the name of a Cherokee TOWN called Tanasi. I don't know if a woman would be named after the town and I don't think the meaning of Tanasi is known.

My dear, back in the 1800s, a lot of girls were named for states. One of my family lines, there was an Indiana, Georgia, Virgnia, Louisiana and my gggrandmother was Missouri. I thought it was strange until I started going over census records.

I even have seen some girls named Arkansas.

I have no clue what so ever. I have a relative from the 1800's that is named Alabama! But i can't say much because I wanted to name my daughter TEXAS. My family said,NO WAY! Keep digging. You will find the answer. Sorry i can't help you.

I had a great grandmother named Tenisee (that was how she spelled it). She was not part Indian as far as I know. She looked as if she could be, but my information so far does not indicate as much. She was born 1 April, 1886, and died 23 February 1991. She lived 104 years, 10 months, 3 weeks and 2 days. She was 35 days shy of her 105th birthday. She had 6 kids, out-lived 2 of them. Only 2 are still living today. Her husband died in 1963, so I never met him. She spent 28 years as a widow. She was born, raised, and lived every single day of those 105 years in Allegheney County, North Carolina. I will never forget her funeral. At her funeral, her oldest surviving son, who was about 80-something at the time, and looked himself as if he had one foot in the grave - stood at the alter to speak. His first words, as he looked at my papa and their 2 sisters, were "well, I guess we're orphans now". This brought a laugh as he was in his 80's and looked himself like he might die any minute. It was the first time I ever saw my papa cry.
