Question:Could he be an alum of Anderson University in Indiana? If so, here's a write up about him from the University Alumni Association:

Rex “Arnett” Ahrendt BA ’64 died Oct. 30, 2005, following an extended illness. While at AU, he played on the tennis and basketball teams. He attended the University of Hawaii to do his graduate studies. During his lifetime, he had two careers — music and golf. He is survived by his mother, Ava Ahrendt; sister, Rita Simpson; and a nephew.

There are 4 Rex Arnetts shown in the social security death index, but none show 2005 as year of death. I am only checking US index, since you did not include a country and can only assume this is where he died.
One possibility is that his death record is not shown as Rex.. it might be a middle name or??

I've just done a search of the BMD for England and Wales, couldn't find anyone with the christian name Rex, could you edit your question and give a location please. Then I am sure one of the excellent researchers that frequent this forum will be able to help you.
