Question:

If the government won't release census details after 1920 on grounds of privacy of address?

no.10 has stated as much http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/censusinfofre...

how come electoral rolls and street directories listing addresses are OK?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: the uk census act 1920 prohibits the release....but the electoral roll is available to anyone (even if they've asked not to be included in the online one , you can still obtain their name and address)

it's wrong Because those are more or less voluntary. You can request not to be included or in the case of electoral rolls, just not register to vote. By definition, the government wants everyone to participate in the census, so one way to ensure this is to not release the details for at least 70 years. Theoretically, and statistically, most of the people who participated in the census will be dead by then. A promise was made when the census was taken that they would sealed for one hundred years. The census has a lot more personnel details than the Electoral Roll has.
