Question:

What does my last name "Ryburn" mean? And what does my family crest and coat of arms look like?

I was told that "Ryburn" was German. But the research that I have done has told me otherwise. It says that it's Scottish, is that true?

Family Crest is a misnomer for a coat of arms. The Crest is the 3 dimensional character at the top of the helm. Coats of arms do not belong to surnames.

Peddlers who sell them on the internet, at shopping malls, at airports and advertise for them in magazines are spoofers. Don't get taken in by them. Whenever you see a coat of arms on someone's den wall, you can be assured they really aren't entitlted to it. There are no laws in the U. S. regarding heraldry so people can put up someone else's that just happens to have their surname.

You can have one designed and made up and that way you would know that it was yours.

The only way you would know if you had a coat of arms in your family tree is to trace your family history which might take a few years and then you might not be entitled to it.

According to Ancestry.Com the following was given as place of origin by Ryburn immigrants to the U. S.

England 2

Scotland 2

Ireland 1

They give the meaning of the name is a Scottish variant of Rayburn.

The origin and meaning of a surname is not very important in genealogy as the same surname can come from more than one nationality. Also not everyone with the same surname is related.

Anytime you wish to trace your family, there are lots of good people on this board that can give you some great ideas. Just ask. He He,, Ryburn

hope this helps. There is a Ryburn Valley in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. I would try http://www.last-names.net. I believe they'll let you try the site for free for 14 days. What IS true is that your approach will lead to more confusion. If I may, let me try shifting the thought.
First... let GO of the concerns of where a name originates, or means. The reality is that many names do NOT HAVE a 'central' origin, but come from different places. I won't even try to tell you it is one place or the other.
What will be accurate is the origin of your ANCESTOR who has the name. If you do some research, for example, you could find out that he/she actually was a Rayburn and born in Wales, or somewhere else.
You are basing your ideas on what someone said. That is not always reliable.
second... you may want to look at the faqs here...

Along the line, it will be explained that family crests and coats of arms are misrepresentations by commercial sites. IE, they want to sell you something. The fact is that these are granted to PERSONS, not families. To illustrate.. Sir John Nobility was granted the coats of arms... it does NOT belong to anyone with the last name of Nobility.
Not to make you feel bad.. your question is one of the most common we get here. I hope you take time to get past these, and get involved with finding real information about your heritage. it can basicaly be both ask otherr family members see what they say, sometimes scottish, german, english, and irish names and dutch can sound a like and since they are all close langauges and relativley close countries those people are practically related The meaning of the surname RYBURN is - one who came from the lands of Ryburn.
