Question:

Can you search a persons death online??

For free, i have spent money on one of those usa people searches and they couldn't find out anything. they said pretty much that if they can't find him, he is probably dead. I am searching for my father and would appreciate any free help i can get.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I tried to find mu mom;s death info and all these places wanted 29,99,or 150.00 dollars if you know the date and state you can go to the news paper and get it from the obits..Lots of luck Shelly The best way to search for deceased US citizens is through the Social Security Death Index. I've attached a link at the bottom that allows for a free search. You can search by name, ss#, etc. Additionally, a google search including "obituaries" can be helpful. its possible, try all you know online search for death persons. I have to laugh at their comment "he is probably dead". You would think they could verify that, since genealogists use the social security death index every day.
Some persons don't show up as expected in that file. One issue is when he might have died.. the online version starts about 1960ish, so someone can have had ss# but died before.
Another problem can be HOW THE INDEX is searched. If you are looking for Michael James Smith and the death was filed under James instead of Michael.. it may be under the radar. I had a chuckle a few months ago, where the local police was holding a stolen tombstone, and could not find where it should be returned. Instead of using any first name, I ran the search with the last name only, and narrowed the search to this county only. As it turned out, I "hit" on the dates, and found that the certificate was filed with the name/initials transposed from that which was inscribed on the stone. With that.. I told them to call Austin, and that the burial place would be on the certificate. Two days later, the news ran a follow up story that the right burial place had been found.
Another question might be knowing what kind of person dad could have been. It is not impossible to change names, or leave the country. Or... not impossible (not knowing your cirmcumstances) that mom did not tell you, or did not KNOW the right name to start with? In other words, there are many reasons why a record may be unfindable.
my direct email is caldwell1949@yahoo.com, if you would like to email me the details of what you have/know. I'll give it a try. Roots Web has death indexes for California, Texas, Maine and Kentucky. Go here and search for the word "Death".

This is a nation-wide guide to death index pages, state by state. Some are free, some are not, so be careful; don't get your hopes up.
http://www.deathindexes.com/ You look at the Social Security death index via www.rootsweb.com or have a look at www.findagrave.com

good luck and good hunting You can try the Latter Day Saints site .. They have a social security death index there and it has a ton of information available for free.. You might also want to try Mellissa data and Zaba search to see if he is listed there .. generally he would be even if deceased due to relatives and / or possible roomates..If you have his full name and a city or state he lived or lives in go to white pages and look for him there .. You can also look around the Ancestry .com and Genealogy.com sites as well as rootsweb and countless others.. There might be a mention of him through family pages.. I wish you the best of luck ..
