Question:

Female line?

I've heard from somewhere that part of your cells is like a record of your mothers DNA and her mothers and hers etc, is this true and if so where is it and how is this done, what can we learn?

Sorry if this is confusing.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: What you are referring to is mitochondrial DNA. It is passed on from mothers to all their children unchanged. Daughters pass this on to all their children, sons do not. It has been used my many people to trace their female ancestors (including my maternal uncle, and therefoe my maternal line.) Many books have been written on the subject including a very interesting one called "The Seven Daughters of Eve". Sorry this is a bit long but I've done a lot of research on this topic and find it very hard to be brief. it is confusing ur forgiven I don't think it's true that yor mother's pure dna is in any cells in your body. You are 100% a mixture of your 2 parents. DNA is an explanation of both your parents, Their genetic etc. in fact a whole history, it's is a very interesting subject, but far to complex to answer in this forum, get some books from the library, but try to be clear in your own mind about what you want and need to know. JeniSerle gave you the best answer. I recently read "7 daughters' too.

Is this true
> Yes

Where is it
> In the body of the cell, not the nucleus. The nucleus has the mixed DNA that is half from your father and half from your mother.

How is this done
> Large fancy expensive scientific machines. "7 Daughters" explains it. There are DNA testing companies that will do it for you for a fee.

what can we learn
If two people match on 30 - 50 "markers", they have a common ancestor. You can learn which of the 7 people who lived 10,000 years ago was your GGG... Grandmother.
