Question:

When voting on questions do you read the answers or just click the first question you see to gather points.?

I have to admit I just go for it to get my points total up.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: i have noticed that if i have answered a question and its first in line and it goes to vote i have got best answer a few times. so the i think hmmm, most people have just clicked the first answer (mine) so what you are saying must be the case! I read the answers first so I can decide who really deserves these points ;) I always read the answers... Nah! Gotta be a good question or a funny gag to get me to respond.
Hey, that must mean this is a good question.lol

Whats this doing in genealogy? Just a thought . . . . . . usually look through them.... yes i do I read them first to see whats been said sometimes people have put what id have said so then i give them a thumbs up sign in agreement with the comment Simple... I can't imagine how you would feel if you spent a 1/2 hour, digging up someone's lost family for them, only to see it go to voting later, and find someone else got the ten points for posting the latest joke or riddle. It is really an insult, to the person who makes a good faith effort to give GOOD answers.
I guess that works in other areas of yahoo answers. Here in genealogy, where there are many persons really trying to help others, it is a frustration that can drive the good people out.
If you want confirmation of that... click on the leaderboard and click to Rustskip's profile, and look at the last thing he posted. He left because of trolls and disputes. What a freaking loss for people who he could be helping.
I am truly sorry to hear you admit that you do this. I bet you really could contribute your knowledge here. i too read them
if i really want points i answer questions, as i have found of late that it isnt very difficult to get the best answer, so 10 points with little effort
plus i dont believe in giving points to people who dont put thought into answer sometimes i do the other way sometimes i do it the other way I read the answers. Sometimes it is hard because there might be quite a few good answers.

Sometimes when there is only one answer and it is off the wall, I vote no best answer.

I think we have to be fair to the person asking the question. Some of these people know so little about genealogy and they really aren't sure what answer is the best and are expecting the people on this board to decide for them.

I don't think we should think of it as giving points to the answerer but giving the best information to the questioner. I vote for the best answer. More times than not, I do tend to skip over the long cut and pastes, though. They may be decent answers, but there's no thought put into them after the first time they're written. If someone put the effort into actually doing research, vs someone who's using something "tried and true", I go for the person who did the latest research and gave a personalized answer to the particular question. I also admit that I never vote for long cut and pastes of information from other sites (particularly wikipedia). Post the applicable paragraph, then put the web address so we can click over and read the rest for ourselves. Uh, I usually just vote for myself. Is that bad? Always read first, the point id to help not chase points. I read all the answers and then make my choice, but I never vote for best answers on genealogy. I love to read resolved questions though, and I love a really challenging question to come up, but they are few and far between now.
Like one of the other people who have answered your question said I really cant be bothered to read the long cut and paste questions, I've read them once before so I don't need to read them again.
I tend to go to another forum where the questions are very quickly posted and rotated to vote. Like I said I don't like c & p answers.
