wendy c., why are you so angry? Romine
Probably a respelling of French Romain, from a personal name (feminine Romaine) meaning ‘Roman’ (Latin Romanus), which was borne by two martyrs and a 7th century bishop of Rouen. The surname has been long established in French-speaking Belgium and England (also written Romayn(e)), whence it may also have been brought to the U.S. Source(s):
www.ancestry.com Irish perhaps? I knew a Dave Romine. Despite being a member of Mensa he was a total twit. I think he said his background was Dutch. you can find information on names on the Internet try house of names . i believe that it may be Scottish It's clearly European. From there it's your pick of country. It means that someone way back in time when surnames were being developed was a Roman living away from Roma. But the name is only an adjective (and forget the part about it probably being French because it could just as easily be Swiss, Dutch, German or Romanian). It doesn't have ties to one unique country. It is, at best, defined as a European surname. Nothing more specific until you do the research to see where the people with that name came from and whether that was their original home. I think it is so mind boggling that the one person who gave you an ACCURATE ANSWER, got thumbs down.
I'll repeat Gen' moms' answer- surnames DO NOT ALWAYS come from just one place. They come from many different locations, none of which are guaranteed to be the "only" place, or the "original" place.
She has enough experience to know. Sorry, many of the persons who give answers here are only guessing, or only want to rack points with no desire at all to care if it is correct or not.
The place of origin for a name is debatable and disputable. The place of origin for a PERSON is factual and provable. sounds latin- perhaps greek or roman Ancestry.Com shows the following given as place of origin by Romine immigrants to the U.S.

Italy 5

Spain 2

Russia 1

Ireland 1

German 1

England 1

They give the meaning as probably a respelling of the French Romaine, from a personal name meaning Roman.

Genevieve's Mom and Wendy are correct. The same surname can come from more than one nationality. Therefore the origin of a surname is not all that relevant in genealogy.

Also, if this is your famiy name, do not be taken in by peddlers of surname products. See the links below
