It's Zuidema.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: whew... thought it would be rare but not as much as I thought. Close to 300 in the social security death index, and over 2000 entries in rootsweb's family files.
I ALWAYS warn people to be careful about assumptions of nationality and name. Many of the entries I saw seem to be connected to the Netherlands. This can be tricky... your ancestor of the name might have heritage from the Netherlands, but his family or line could have migrated to Brazil in the 1700's. Another thing to remember is that your surname (if this is yours) is only part of your heritage. Just going back to gr grandparents, you have 8 of those, and you are equally part of each one. So.. to illustrate the possible scenario, John Z went to Brazil, married a Brazilian, and of your 8 gr grandparents, he could be the only one of that heritage.
The short answer is that it is probably from the Netherlands. The long answer is that if you want to really understand your heritage, you need to actually trace where your actual ancestors came from. Brazil was just an analogy.
