Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Coats of arms do not belong to surnames and that is what the peddlers on the internet, at shopping malls and airports sell you.

They were granted to nobility who passed them on to their sons or they were granted to those who have been knighted. The coats of arms granted to those who have been knighted are not hereditary.

I agree with the above poster. You can have one made up and you will know that it is yours not one that was granted to someone that you might not even be related to. I TOO HAVE SEARCHED FOR SUCH A SITE FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW. AND I CAN HONESTLY SAY, MOST OF THE SITES I FOUND, EITHER DON'T SEEM CREDIBLE OR REQUIRE SOME OUTRAGEOUS FEE. GOOD LUCK, I'M SKEPTICAL AS TO WHETHER A LEGITIMATE SITE FOR THIS ACTUALLY EXISTS.... The credible site to work with is the College of Arms. Once you get there, it will be explained that coats of arms are not what you think in the first place. They are granted only to individual persons, not families, and are inheirited by a single heir.
Of course the ones you have found will tell you different. You already figured the reason... they are in business to sell you something. People get sucked in by this, because they WANT a family crest, and are not concerned with it being credible or not.
Unless you live in the UK and your father/grandfather was granted one... you don't HAVE one. There is a huge misconception about coats of arms. First of all, there is no standard coat of arms for any family. Each family went to a person in ancient days who made up their coat of arms for that person. it usually consisted of images of something that defined the person's life or family or where he/she was from. You can look all this up, google coat of arms.'

you can have one made up today; there are businesses all over the place that will make one for you. For starters there is no such thing as a "family coat of arms." The crest is the top part of the coat of arms, so a "familiy crest" does not exist either. Coats of arms are issued to individuals, not to families.

If you want to find out whether someone with your surname had a coat of arms you can check with the college of arms(or similar institution) of the country your family came from.
Some of the coats of arms shown and sold online are in fact coats of arms that were used by someone with that surname, many are indeed fictitious and the info given with those coats is also fictitious.

If you are of Irish descent and you know what clan your family belonged to you can try looking up the clan online. Many of the hereditary chiefs of the old Irish clans have reformed a standing council of chiefs in order to preserve and promote Irish and clan history and culture. Most of the clans represented by the standing council have some sort of worldwide organization and a website. The neat thing about being of Irish descent is that the standing council of chiefs still recognizes ancient Irish Brehon law respecting the Chief's coat of arms; any clanmember may use the basic clan arms. The chief usually has a personal coat of arms which differs slightly and may only be used by the chief. everything about it being hereditory is true, though this depends on the country you come from.

My last name O'Sullivan, Irish, as I am a member of the O'Sullivan clan I am entitled to use the crest, more than this, as I have the name O'Sullivan, I am entitled to use both the O'Sullivan-Mor coat of arms and the O'Sullivan-Bere coat of arms as I am an actual member of the very extended family.
check out the origen of your name than check on the rules regarding crests/coats of arms in that country, if you're Irish you are entitled to use the crest/Coat of arms depending on your surname and if your family is the ruling family of the clan.

x Just type your name in the search bar on the Left hand side and see what it comes up with.
