Question:

Last name Viol?

My last name is Viol, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about it, if you know anyone, where it may have come from, etc. FYI, it came from my dad's side, whose father is Italian. My dad's family is relatively unknown to me and I want to learn more.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The rule of thumb is that you can research deceased persons, but not live ones. Thus, you can work with grandpa (if he is not living), if you have a name and location. There are 60+ of the name in the social security death index. Over 200 entries are in rootsweb's family trees. Just for curiosity, I checked if any of those show a birth in Italy, and none do. Some show France and other locations. What is important to focus is that NAMES may come from more than one location. Persons (or their ancestors) will come from somewhere exact... and for accurate results, it is basic to find the records for YOUR ancestor.
You did not mention if dad is living, or if you have contact. If he is alive and you have contact, then you can start by asking the name(s) and locations relating to his parents. The alternative is to see if you can't confirm them in the social security death index to get the dates, then work to support that with records such as birth/death records (including obits or funeral records), and depending on age, they may also be findable in the 1930 census.
Again.. not knowing your specifics, family wise... it may also be of help if you can be in touch with any of dad's possible siblings or their children. They may also be able to give you info that your dad is not aware of. http://find.person.superpages.com/...
