Definitely asian. No doubt. ;) I would just ask, most people aren't offended when you ask what nationality they are.

He could actually be a mixed Asian. Dolch seems more european type name....or maybe he was adopted. Are you sure he is Asian. Dolch seems to be an European name. Dolch
perhaps from Dolch ‘dagger’, ‘knife’ (of uncertain origin); presumably a metonymic occupational name for a maker of such weapons or perhaps a nickname for someone who habitually carried one. However, the vocabulary word was not recorded before 1512, and the surname may alternatively be a variant of Dolge, a topographic name meaning ‘long’, from Old Slavic dolgy.
variant of Dolen.

Hope this helps. One of the basic answers here (from those who have been researching many years) is that a surname has NOTHING to do with nationality or ethnic heritage. Names can, and do, come from different plances; many names are shared by both African Americans and others, and least of all.. the name is possibly a variation of something else originally. That's what I advise persons working their own names or genealogy.
So.. the only real way to find out is to ask him. And he'd need to know something about his ancestry to give you accurate info.
Hey... if he is a nice person, I can't imagine why he might be bothered by it. If he is cute enough, it could be a good icebreaker.
