Question:

How can you find the names of people that came over from Europe, in the mid to late 1700's?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Sometimes you can find these records at the US Archives in Washington, DC. Depending on the approximate date the ancestor came to the US and also colonial census records. You can also go on line to Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com and find a lot of records by family surname, that people have compiled and will share.

If you know when your ancestors left the old country and where they left from, you can sometimes look up old ships registers that will tell you when a ship sailed for what port and who was on the ship. Also, all the churches of the time kept baptismal records so you can look up the births and deaths of your ancestors if you know approximately where they lived and when. The records of France and England are particularly good.

Researching ancestry got a whole lot easier with the advent of the Internet.
