Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You can go on line and look up the records to see if your relatives are on any Indian Rolls; when the US tried to census the Native American populations. If you are from NC, then you would most likely be from the Eastern Band of Cherokee, which is also my ancestry. You can look on any number of sites available on the Internet for Native American resources.

Caution will prevail when trying to look up Native American ancestors: If your people are not listed on the Indian Rolls; then you cannot be recognized as a Native American. My people are listed on the Guion Miller roll when they tried to claim money from the US government for lands the US took from them when their old family land at Moccasin Bend, Tn., was seized, but they are not listed on any of the other tribal or reservation rolls.

Scroll down the list of Indian Rolls to start your search:

You can also contact the Eastern Band of Cherokee on their reservation and visit their archives to see if your people are listed.

Even if you prove your Native American heritage by DNA testing; that does not automatically entitle you to be entered on Tribal Rolls or get any sort of cash settlement from the Tribal trusts.
