Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Onoe of my ancestors, my son's namesake, is Garrett Van Swearingen. He arrived around 1657 leading of group of new colonists at the age of 21. Ultimately he settled down in St Mary's City, the colonial capital of Maryland. The old city has been part of an archaeological dig for some time - the foundation of Garrett's "meeting house" - tavern - has been uncovered.
There's lots of data on him on the web, including a photograph of a painting of him. (Kinda hoping my son doesn't grow up to look JUST like him!)
Another branch, the Gilchrists, arrived in the early 1700's and settled in Pennsylvania. My namesake, born 200 years before me, and his father fought side-by-side in the war for American Independence. 3 other ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War as well, including one in the early Navy.
