Trying to find out the origins of the name Holdcroft....?

We can't figure out if it's german or English. Anyone have any idea? We have no clue really what the origin of it is. Getting conflicting results.

It's actually my married name... My husband's father was adopted but kept his original name.

After his father's death, we have been unable to locate ANY family. But then, we don't know where to start as none of them came out of the woodwork after his funeral. It's been very difficult as we have no where to start from.
