Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: If you go to the Mormon church records at familysearch.org
and input your surname, you will find a list of records
which will lead you to the origin of the name.

Here are a few:

Sankt Elisabeth, Berlin Stadt, Brandenburg, Preussen

Next, you will have to consult a 19th c. map of Europe.
Most of the towns listed however, appear to be in present day Germany.

Going down the search page you will find social security records.
It looks like the primary area of settlement for Milatz in the US was Michigan; probably all of your relatives.

There is a Milazt family page at http://milatz.net/
Their homepage states
"Diese Seite wird zur Zeit neu bearbeitet"
(This site is at present again worked on)
which I guess means it's "Under construction"
