Question:

Is there a website with a list of people who can perform legally perform marriages in or near Richmond, VA?

My mother and her fiance want to marry on Dec. 31, 2006, and are having some difficulty locating a list of all available people who can legally perform the ceremony. I would be very grateful if anyone can direct me to a website, or provide names, or any other helpful suggestions! Thank you so much!!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: One of you may be able to get a special one-day license to perform marriages from the county clerk. You can in California, but states differ. Call and ask. If not, someone can get "Ordained" by the Universal Life Church for a nominal fee:

Basically once they buy the license from the county clerk and do the blood tests, they are married. Who says "I now pronounce you man and wife" before the eating, drinking and dancing starts has lost its importance over the years. (Back before formal registrations, it mattered a lot.)

Either way, it is a nice touch and saves $200 or so if the bride or groom's brother, father, best friend, aunt, uncle . . . (someone with silver hair and a warm baritone would be my choice) does the service rather than a minister you don't know, or one who you do know who has plans for that evening and is in a hurry.

ULC will send you three sample services, or you can swipe one off the Internet from the Common Book of Prayer, 1623, and alter to suit. The CBP one is the traditional one you hear in the movies.
