Question:

What do you know about hungarian people?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I am an English lady married to a Hungarian man who fled Hungary in 1956 when he was a teenager. I know quite a lot about Hungary and Hungarians then! There have been a few programmes about the 1956 revolution in Hungary on BBC TV lately, as it is the 50th anniversary this month. The Russian troops invaded and crushed the revolution, and there was a lot of bloodshed. Hungarians tended to be bitter against the West for not coming to their aid at that time....

The Hungarian language is different from any other European language (apart from possibly Finnish) but I did manage to learn it to speak to my in-laws! Generally I have found that the Hungarian women are friendly, but especially the older men are chauvinistic towards women...! Under Communism, children were forced to study Russian at school; now they want to learn English.

The country is very different now from when it was still Communist (before 1989). People can buy Western goods now, but don't have the money. Under Communism, basic essentials were cheap and plentiful, and most people had a job. Now there is galloping inflation, just like in the rest of the EU which Hungary has now joined. Some Hungarians say they were happier under Communism, as the pre-1989 systems there was not too repressive, and at least they were more secure in many ways. They seemed to have a knack of "toeing the Party line" but still managing to enjoy life. Now things are more uncertain.
