Question:

Does anyone have any experience of ancestry.co.uk?

I've signed up for a free trial, so that I can find relatives etc. Wasn't having any luck, so to test it out I entered myself 'cos I knew the info I had about me, at least, was accurate - and I couldn't be found!!

I can't think what I can be doing wrong - or is this service a total waste of time?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Yes, I also signed up for the free trial, the time ran out before I had spent enough time to realise how poor it is. I think part of the problem is that (like so much else on the net) it presumes you're a US citizen, searching for US ancestors. For those of us who aren't North American, it's a waste of time and money.

Please be aware that they carry on helping themselves to your money every year via Direct Debit, and my card issuer was unable to get the money back once it had gone through. I asked Ancestry for my money back and they told me to go and jump in the lake.

So if you have signed up and realised what a waste of time they are, make sure you cancel your direct debit before it goes through again. I now do my research through the Family Records Office and websites such as Genes Reunited and the Commonwealth Wargraves Commission.
