Question:

Need web site that is in english that have mexico heritage info on obituaries, births, census, etc.?

My great great grandfather was a bounty hunter and i found out that he went to Piedra Nedgras and that is were my great great grandmother is from. I would like to find out if she had any relatives that were left behind in Piedras Negras, Mexico. I know that my great great grand father came across the seas from spain when he was 12 years old but have not been able to find relative on him yet. So im trying my luck with my great great grandmother who he took from Mexico to Texas. I don't know spanish and I know she came from that place. I just would like more information as far as I can dig back. Are there any web sites that are in english that have mexico heritage info on obituaries, marriages, births, census, stuff like that? That is my main question.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Well, you could try the Mormon site at

www.familysearch.org

It's free and they have more international coverage than some of the other free sites.

While they might not have records specific to your ancestors online, they do have what they call a "Locality Catalog" which lists all the available documents for locations around the world. These documents are held at their main library at Salt Lake City UT but can be rented for a nominal (3-4 bucks) from a local "Family History Center". These centers are located in most cities in the country; usually you can find one in the yellow pages under "Genealogy".

There is also a "Family History Centers" link on their website that you can use to find a center near you.

The key once again is that "Locality Catalog". Usually each center has a copy. First you look up the specific locale you're researching, select the documents you need, then ask the librarian how to access or rent them. When I used the service 10 years ago, everything was on microfilm. I would imagine most of it has been digitized by now.

In fact, I see that they now have a centralized library catalog right on their web site. It includes place names, so maybe the thing to do is go there first:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/...

That'll take you right to the catalog's main page. In the "place search", enter just "Piedras Negras" - NOT mexico. You'll get two choices, one for Costa Rica, and one for Mexico. Pick the Mexico one, and voila! You get links to Census, Church Records, and Civil Registrations for Piedras Negras, Mexico.

Good Luck!

I wanted to remind you that what you will get at those links are the documents available from your local Family History Center, not the actual documents themselves. Still, it's a good way to find out what's out there and narrow down the search for the documents you need.
