Question:

What does "second cousin first removed" mean?

We also hear "first cousin second removed". What exactly does this mean as in family relations to us ? We know we have cousins, aunts, uncles, etc... but please explain where this "first & second" label comes from or how it fits in the family tree scheme.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It's actually "first cousin, twice removed" or "third removed". As an example:

My mum's cousin is technically my second cousin. He is also my "first cousin, once removed". My mum's second cousin would my "first cousin, twice removed".
