Preface - In the late l870's Henry Mallet Veale had returned from South Africa to Passaford with his wife Elizabeth and his six daughters. His wife, the former Elizabeth Sa(u)nders , died in 1883. One daughter, Caroline had married William Birch Gascoigne of Fishleigh House, near Hatherleigh, in 1885. Henry remarried in 1886 and took a trip to the continent in 1887 with his new wife Ellen , the widow of Christopher Edmonds of the Ceylon Civil Service. They were joined for part of the trip by Elizabeth (Bessie) who was 26 years old, and Sophia Elinor (little Nellie) who was 12 years old. Daughters Lucy and Emily probably remained at Passaford. Emily was soon to be married to Lionel West of The Rydings Hall, Birstall, and to settle in Birmingham. Tom Ellacott, who is listed in the 1881 census as living at #2 Gibbons C in Hatherleigh, was listed as a gamekeeper, so he may have worked for Henry. The Smyth-Osbornes lived at Ash House, the former manor house of the Malets of Ash. The Oldhams, who had assumed the patronymic Oldham on inheriting the manor of Hatherleigh, were originally named Laing. The Isbells were cousins of Henry's, being descendants of Henry's aunt Mary.
