Question:

Where can I learn more about my Huron heritage?

I found out that my great-grandmother was a Huron Indian and this was hidden by my family for years. I would really like to learn more, are there any Hurons out there who can tell me where I can go (I'm in Ontario) to speak with an elder and learn about my heritage? Also, can I be accepted into a community like this when I have no previous knowlegdge and only one distant relation who is Native?

You can be accepted, but, you need to do your family tree to discover wher your ancestry converges with Huron tribes. To do your family tree, that is another question. Start with you, get birth certificate, get parents births, marriage, etc. Get their parents, and their parents parents. That is how you will find your link. Research each branch and surname, as you go back in the generations.

To confirm Huron genes, you can do a DNA Test. But, that will not do the needed paperwork to be accepted into Dawes Rolls, or tribal acceptance. You will have to prove your link. You need to be prepared for some work, and time to do this. People work for years to do exactly what you are asking.
