Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Go to LDS.org and click onto the Family Search link. It is the largest single data base for family records.
Hamrick.com gives information about the origins of family names and how they disbursed over America in the last 150 years.
Ancestors.com is the largest commercial web site for family history research. They have a two week free introductory license. After that, it gets expensive.
For live assistance, go to the yellow pages and look up The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Family History Center. There should be one near you. They have people assigned to help anybody that comes in. I know because I am one of them.
