Question:

Where does the name wyndham come from?

my family are from ireland, but are surname is english. But where from?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: According to a book I have "The Oxford Names Companion", it is an English and Irish name, the books says, and I quote -

"Wyndham - 1 - English: habitation name from a place in W Sussex, near W Grinstead, apparently so called from an OE (Old English) personal name 'Winda' + OE 'Hamm' (water meadow); or from 'Wymondham' in Leics. and Norfolk, so called from the OE personal name 'Wigmund' + OE 'ham' (homestead). The name De Wyndem is found on Westmorland as early as 1284, and the surname may additionally derive from some unidentified place in N England.
2 - Irish: Anglicized form of various Gael. names derived from 'gaoith' (wind)
Variant spelling - Windham"

The book I have was published by Oxford University Press (www.oup.com) - ISBN - CN 100757

Hope this helps
