Question:

Any free websites to help research your family tree?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Top 5 free sites for internet genealogy:
1. http://www.familysearch.org - access to hundreds of millions of records from all over the world, collected by the Mormons. Also lots of research tips. More data here than at the next 10 largest sites.
2. http://www.usgenweb.com - A volunteer effort which has web sites for every county in the US. Lots of info if you know where your ancestors were. There's also a Canadian Genweb and a Worldgenweb.
3. http://www.rootsweb.com - A huge collection of user submitted data, thousands of mailing lists for specific surnames and locations, and lots more.
4. http://www.cyndislist.com - This is THE directory where you can find all the other sites. It's a searchable list of thousands of genealogy sites worldwide.
5. http://www.ancestry.com has lots of US info and some on western Europe, but while a little bit of info is free, it is mostly a very expensive pay site. BUT, many public libraries and all the Mormon Family History Centers have subscriptions to Ancestry, so you can access it for free at the library or FHC, though not from home.
