This interesting surname of English origin is a locational name from Shipperbottom in Lancashire, deriving from the Old English pre 7th
Century "scepwoella" meaning "spring where sheep are washed" plus "boom" valley. The surname date's back to the late 13th Century, (see
below). Further recordings include James Shepobotham (1579) and John Shippobotham (1582) "The Wills of Prestbury, East Cheshire".
Variations in the idiom of the spelling include Shovelbottom, Shipperbottom, Shoebottom, Shoebotham, Shubotham, etc.. Alice
