Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Try the " Ship Lists: Searching for Ships in the New York Microfilms in One Step" web site. For 23 December 1949 this is the list of ship names:

General R M Blatchford,
Alpherat,
Ambronia,
Bowmonte,
Brynje,
Bulkstar,
Calliroy,
Camp Namanu,
Esso Bethlehem,
Gdynia,
Gulfhawk,
Nyhorn,
Otto Banck,
Petros,
Robin Trent,
Thallepus,
Vasaholm,
Vindeggen,
Vulcania,
plus one listed as "Unknown"

To see the actual passenger lists, this site links to Ancestry.com, which requires a log in. Try Ancestry's free 14-day trial to view that web site, or go to a local library or Family History Center that has an Ancestry.com subscription. (The free ellisisland.org web site only has records for up to 1924, I think.)

The "General R M Blatchford" was a Navy transport ship launched in 1944, so that is quite possibly the ship that carried your father, although there is at least one other Navy ship also listed that you should also check.
