Question:

Anyone know the origin of the surname "Viggiano"?

I've heard that it means "princely" and that the surname comes from Viggiano, Italy, near Napoli (Naples). Does it really mean "princely"? and when was the town founded, and how? and did people with the surname "viggiano" all move to the U.S. en masse, or in waves? any other info on the surname? thank you

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: As far as I can speak italian, I'm not aware of any connection between the words prince (principe) and viggiano.

The name Viggiano derives, as some say, from greek verb "izano", "I stay here"
In ancient maps you can fid thename as Bizano or Viziano;

The others say it originates from the latin word Vibius.
In that time, the latifundy (the farm), villa or vicus, assumed the name of the family or the landlord. So from the name Vibius, presumably after somebody called Vibio Flacco, we get the naming Vibianus pagus, which refers not only to the farm, but the enite area of the habitat. The name has transformed through the ages in Bizano and finally into Viggiano.
