What does n.f.i. mean on my birth certificate when it's listed as father's place of birth?

on my birth certificate my fathers name is listed as "alfred diaz" and his place of birth says "N.F.I." I also have been told that his real name was "Albert" and that he died before I was born. Any help on how I can learn the facts of my father?
