Question:

How can I access uk census information?

Im trying to research my family tree and Im a bit irked about the national archives charging to access the census - surely it should be free under freedom of information? Im completely new to the geneology game so if anyone can give me some good advice on how to do this it would be much appreciated!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: If you haven't done so already, try

http://freecen.rootsweb.com/

Most areas and dates are covered, though it is an ongoing project it is very reliable.

Also worth looking at is :

A great site where volunteers look for records locally. You may even become a volunteer yourself.

Another option is to contact a local Family History Society, contact them direct and they may look up in formation for you. You'll probably need to google for the name of the local Family History Society.

Also join (free) a forum in the area you are looking at, i.e. http://www.rootsweb.com , and you may find someone with similar interests.

Good Luck
