Question:

Does anyone know of any Native American tribes near Columbus Ohio?

My grandmother was either full or half native American but no one bothered to find out from which tribe since she was adopted. Anyone know if there are tribes in that part of Ohio? (Columbus,Zanesville... that area)

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You're working from the assumption that she was born to members of a local tribe. If she was born pre-1965, though, that's not likely the case.

Between 1900-1965, the states and the federal government worked to assimilate Native children into society by taking children away from their parents and putting them up for adoption through large agencies. It was RARE that a child put up for adoption would be placed with a family in the immediate area of their birth family so that they couldn't be taken back. She could have been born anywhere within 500-1000 miles of where she was eventually placed and all records of her birth and birth family erased. Instead, her birth certificate would be replaced with a certificate of adoption that only listed her adoptive parents' info.

The only thing you can do to try finding which tribe she belonged to is to do a mitochondrial DNA test through one of the genealogy tracking groups and see where she links up. It would involve either her personal DNA (if she's alive) or DNA from one of her daughters or a daughter of her daughter. Otherwise, you'll never have any way of identifying her tribal roots.
