Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Find a large library in your area and call to see if they have a public use access to Ancestry.com. That means they buy a library membership for about $11000 and you can use all of Ancestry's resources for free from a library computer.

You can also visit the National Archives and Records Administration regional offices (but there aren't many, so unless one's in your area the library is a better deal). Also check with the official library of your state. They'll have all of the records you need on file and free for use, and most also have public use licenses for Ancestry, too. On top of that, many states have been digitizing or filming all known copies of all newspapers ever printed in the state, so it makes researching even better from that aspect.
