Ask your parents who their grandparents were, then look up people with the same surname on any of the links Rust Skipper gave you and claim them. Keep the ages reasonable. Standard people marry about age 20 / 22, women 2 years younger than the men. Before 1930, people had children about every 2 - 3 years, from marriage until the wife turned 40/45. Keep your "family" in the same shire if you are in the UK, or moving gradually westward in the USA.

Teachers will sometimes give assignments that are ridiculous. It would take an experienced genealogist 60 - 90 days to assemble a well-checked family tree, assuming there were no glitches. Asking a student with no experience to do one in a week is ridiculous.
