Question:

What are the origins of the last name Searby?

I'm looking at my family tree and I found a family member with the last name Searby. I'm guessing it's from the UK however I found a link somewhere saying that it's Jewish. Does anybody know the orgins of that name?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Surnames with "by" at the end are almost always English. "By" comes from a Viking-era word for "village". There is a village named Searby in Lincolnshire, England. Perhaps your ancestors came from there. There are quite a few families with the surname Searby in Lincolnshire today.
