Position:Home>Genealogy> How can you find out your ancestry?

Question:

How can you find out your ancestry?

I know their are lots of sites, but any for free?

Im trying to find out how much Indian I have in me, since my father's side has Cherokee and my mother's side has Sioux.

My boyfriend has enough Indian to where he got the NA papers at birth (his mom is 3/4 Indian), and I also need to know how we can find how to retrieve those papers & get new documents to replace the old lost ones?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Rootsweb.com is a good place to start. Not only is there a lot of info there, but you can sign up for mailing lists of groups that you have something in common with - based on surnames, locations, ethnicity, etc. People in genealogy are very helpful and I'm sure you'll find some who can get you going in the right direction. Ancestry.com is expensive, but some libraries have it, and you can use theirs. If you need more help, you can e-mail me at cmm_home@yahoo.com. I don't have any Indian ancestry, but have been working on my own genealogy for several years now, so I know some of the resources.
