Question:

Ancestry . co.UK why don't they do SCOTLAND or, do they ?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: In general, Scottish family history is difficult to do on-line for free. As far as I am aware, the only site with access to Scottish civil registration records (birth, marriage, death certificates beginning in 1855) is the government-run pay site, www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. They are notoriously protective of their data and haven't allowed anyone else to put Scotland's civil registration on-line. They also have the census returns for Scotland. Ancestry.com purchases data sets for their website, but if the data is not for sale, they cannot put it up.

For further information, GENUKI has a good overview of sources and websites in Scotland. The Society of Genealogists also has a good list of links and addresses for British genealogy that may be of assistance.
