Question:

Anyone know of free genealogy research sites in Great Britain, especially Scotland?

All of my ancestors originated in Scotland and England

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: In general, Scottish family history is difficult to do on-line for free. As far as I am aware, the only site with access to Scottish civil registration records (birth, marriage, death certificates beginning in 1855) is the government-run pay site, www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. They are notoriously protective of their data and haven't allowed anyone else to put Scotland's civil registration on-line. They also have the census returns for Scotland.

Of course the IGI on the free LDS site www.familysearch.org has many, many Scottish records, but information found there should always be verified against original sources.

The Old Parochial Registers pre-1850's are very useful, but again, I don't think they've been put on-line. I know they are available for free as one of the data sets on the old DOS version of Family Search. This is available at the LDS Family History Centres, but call your local centre first to see if they have that particular set of records. Find your local centre through the familysearch.org website.

For further information, GENUKI has a good overview of sources and websites in Scotland (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/intro.h... The Society of Genealogists also has a good list of links and addresses for British genealogy that may be of assistance(http://www.sog.org.uk/leaflets/addresses...
