Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Hey Plank,

Swyrich.com says:
Origin: English

"Spelling variations of this family name include: Rankill, Ramsgill, Ramgill, Ramgell, Rankle, Ramkle and many more.

First found in Yorkshire where they were anciently seated as Lords of the Manor.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: settlers, who arrived along the eastern seaboard, from Newfoundland, to Maine, to Virginia, the Carolinas, and to the islands."

but you should look at the Family Search site, there are some really interesting entries. One of the oldest Los Angeles entries I ever saw there. An original californinan. And lots of ancestors with English origins. This is proof.
