Question:

Where can I find a list of surnames that are indigenous to individual English counties?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: A good question. Unfortunately, I don't have a solid answer for you. I can tell you that as someone who has studied my family history for years, I have looked into this matter.

I do know, however, that any English name that ends in "thorpe" ie, Calthorpe, is indigenous to three counties: Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.

If you have a particular surname in mind, try going to http://www.rootsweb.com

Once there, you can search for surnames and see what counties come up most frequently.

Hope this helps.
