Question:

Where can I find Death Notices for the year of 1994 through 1996 in Tippah County Mississippi?

My daughter is looking for her fathers family and I can really use help. Thanks

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: One sneaky tweak I found is using the social security death index, and going to advanced search. Unlike some computer indexes, it will run without using a name. I ran the search using tippah co ms as the last residence, and the year 1994. It gave me a list of over 200 persons who died that year, and last residence was Tippah. One question I am NOT sure of, is whether this proves where they actually died. People in rural areas often die in the nearest big hosptal.. which might be in a big town in an adjoining county, and even another state if they lived close to the state line. Example, both my daughters were born in Reno, Nevada.. but we lived in Northern Calif.
An alternate trick is just using the surname, since many times a death certificate misspells the first name, or we know someone by a nickname and never heard the quirky first name that they hated and hid.
A county clerk MIGHT have the death record (not obit), but normally getting a copy means contacting the state. Most states limit certificates now, to certain family members, for fear of id theft. Assuming your daughter's birth certificate shows dad's name, that should work. It is not as easy if it is not dad's death record being sought.
Ripley is the county seat for Tippah, and on the map, it looks fairly rural. I would expect that to be where you will find the main newspaper, and hopefully they are online. Obits in smaller areas tend to have more information, but that is not guaranteed. Not everyone even has an obit.
I desperately love genweb's county pages. They are run by volunteers, some have every scrap of info online, but a few are glorified query boards. All counties also have mailing lists through rootsweb, sometimes local volunteers are on those lists. It's a great place to find the status of obits, if those are not online.
