There are a TON of entries at the Family Search site. Some have pedigree files that are quite extensive. Most of the Varnado entries are in Mississippi or Louisiana, so that is not likely the origin of the name. There is a Sarah Varnado entry in the Pedigree files, that has a birth in 1784. All of the entries that have pedigree files show that you have to order the CD from LDS Family Search. I doubt this will cost much, so you should order it. It will tell you where they came from, and tie the origins at least in the US together.

The GENFORUM entry for Varnado has 260 messages that you can search for information. You can also post at that site, and get dependable answers. There are variants of the name there too, I noticed Varnido.

Finally, there is a Leonardo Varnado from France that married in South Carolina in 1743. Found at LDS Family Search the following:
