Question:

How many courthouses really burned during the Civil War?

All of you genealogists have probably been hampered in your search for information by searching in a locality where the courthouse burned during the Civil War. Sometimes I feel like clerks like to give the courthouse burned excuse just so I'll go away. (Ha! Ha!) Do any of you fellow researchers have a handle on just how many courthouses really burned. Is there a published list anywhere? Thank you for your replies.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I would suggest using the "Redbook, American State, County, and Town Sources" Edited by Eichholz

Each county listing has the address, date formed parent counties, and starting dates for birth, marriage, death, land, probate, and court records.

It also has notations if the courthouse burned down and when.

Not a complete list, but useful to kown so they don't tell you it burned to go away.

You can buy the book at Half.com from $8 to $25 (used of course, but a good reference)
