Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It isn't specific to one country or region. From immigration records, people from Afghanistan to Austria came here with that surname. It's German, Croatian and Turkish, as well as Italian and Albanian. In Muslim it means "Moses". In Italy it's a place name. In Germany it's ???

Add to that the fact that it's an abbreviation of many longer Slavic names and it would be hard to say for sure what it means until you go back and find where your particular family came from and what their ethnic and religious affiliations were.
