Question:

Where did the last name Why originate?

There is a Wye River and Valley in Wales. I have also read that the name originally is from the French name "Guy".

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: As you already see, there are conflicting answers to what you ask. My opinion on this is that, in many cases, there IS no one, verifiable "origin" of a name. Or, someone "concludes" that the name came from the river you mention (for example) but their conclusion has no proof to back it up.
To illustrate.. many surnames started as occupational 'labels' ie John the (black)smith; John the (bread)baker. Not hard to see how there could have been many blacksmiths named John, all of them from various locations.. and none related in any way. William le Blund (and his brother) literally were the Blonds, who came with William the Conqueror. The name evolved to Blount, even though the brothers settled in different spots. Dolphay is an American version of Dauphinais, and probably can be traced to a county clerk who didn't speak French. In the mid 1300's, a name could well have been in use in one English shire.. but since no records survive to show it, the first time it APPEARS, might be 100 yrs later in a totally different place.
There are many many factors that are involved in surnames, and my answer is not what many would like to hear. But, it might be more realistic in thinking about origins of names (a common question here).
I always reccomend that it is more personal and reliable, to search for your own ancestry, person by person, one generation back at a time. This I can guarantee, it is much more FUN and satisfying. Somewhere along the way, it often leads to YOUR own 10th great grandfather, William Why, who may have been born in Ireland, had his portrait painted (if you are lucky, you may find it online). Or... maybe your 5th gr grandfather turns out to be adopted, his surname is something else entirely, and now his own lineage becomes the goal.
Have fun...
